Follow this guide to create or update shift types in Humanforce WFM. Shift types define how worked time and leave are recorded, interpreted by awards, and exported to payroll.
Part 1: Create a new shift type
- Go to Admin > Award Config > Shift Types.
- The Shift Types page displays all existing shift types in your organisation.
- Select + Add new record.
- Enter a Name for the shift type.
- This is the label users see when selecting shifts or leave.
- (Optional) Complete additional identifiers such as Short Name or Export Code if required for payroll or integrations.
- Configure the shift type options as required for your use case:
- Whether the shift is a normal worked shift, leave, or unpaid
- Whether employees can request this shift type
- Whether the shift type holds an accrual balance
- Whether the shift type belongs to a shared leave balance group
- Select
Save.
The new shift type appears in the Shift Types list and is available for use across timesheets, leave requests, and rosters.
Note: Shift type rules must also be configured in the relevant award profiles before the shift type can be used. Contact your Humanforce consultant or support team if you need assistance with award maintenance.
Part 2: Update an existing shift type
- Go to Admin > Award Config > Shift Types.
- Select
Edit next to the desired shift type.
- Update the required settings, such as:
- Enabling or disabling leave requests
- Adjusting accrual behaviour
- Assigning the shift type to a shift type group
- Updating identifiers used for payroll or reporting
- Select
Save.
The updated configuration applies immediately and is used for future leave requests, accruals, and timesheet processing.
Part 3: Delete a shift type
- Go to Admin > Award Config > Shift Types.
- Select Delete next to the desired shift type.
- Note: You cannot delete a Default shift type.
- Select Yes to confirm the deletion.
Review reporting to confirm the shift type has not been used in rosters or timesheets, as deleting a used shift type may impact payroll outcomes.
The shift type is removed and can no longer be selected or applied.
Part 4: Reorder shift types
The order of shift types controls how they appear across various screens (for example, payroll processing screens).
- Go to Admin > Award Config > Shift Types.
- Select a Shift Type.
- The selected shift type will be highlighted
- Use Move Up or Move Down to change its position.
- Select Submit to save the new order.
Note: You can also select the Name or Export Code column headers to sort shift types.
Shift types display in the new order across Humanforce WFM.
Additional information
- Shift types marked as Leave Type can be requested by employees and approved by managers.
- Shift types with Enable Accruals selected will maintain a leave balance.
- Shift types assigned to a Shift Type Group share a combined leave balance across multiple leave types.
